Sam Noble Museum
Explore Family Fun!


Explore the world around you in a fun and exciting way! There are spaces available in many of the museum's Summer Explorers classes: discovery-based programs for children ages 4 to 14. All classes will spend some time outside on museum grounds and some classes will meet at the museum and then travel in museum vans to local areas around Norman. All classes are taught by trained museum staff. The 2013 Summer Explorers Program is sponsored by Love's Travel Stops and Country Stores.

Name that Dinosaur July 1, 2, 3, and 5      9 to 10:30 a.m.
How many dinosaurs can you name? Find out who’s who in Oklahoma’s prehistory with games, songs, crafts and lots of fun for you and your little one!

Ages 5 to 6

Bugs and Slugs
July 8 - 12   8 to 10 a.m. (Program full. Room on waiting list available)
They are in the air, in the water and even under your feet! Get ready to get dirty as we burrow into Norman parks for everything that is creepy, crawly and cool.

Dinosaur Detectives
June 24 - 28 1 to 3 p.m.
July 22 - 26 1 to 3 p.m. (Program full. Room on waiting list available)
July 29 – August 2 1 to 3 p.m
Dig into the past with us as we learn about life as a dinosaur. We will uncover clues about dinosaur survival by finding fossils, meeting dinosaur relatives and investigating dinosaurs of the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous!

Pond Explorers July 15 - 19    8 to 10 a.m. (Program full. Room on waiting list available)
Dragonflies, tadpoles and sun fish….oh my! Find out what is living in the water as we explore different ponds around Norman.

Slime and Scales I
July 22 - 26 8 to 10 a.m.

Snakes, lizards, frogs and toads. We will study scaly and slimy animals in their natural habitats and learn how to safely catch and handle them.

Wild Wonders   July 15 - 19    10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Program full. Room on waiting list available)
Have you ever thought about how many wild and wonderful things are right in your backyard? Join us as we explore local parks and forest areas to search for wild plants and animals of Oklahoma!

Critter Connections
July 29 – August 2    10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

What makes animals the same or different from one another? Why do some animals have fur and others have feathers? Why are some animals endangered while others thrive? Find out the answers to these questions and more in this cool class all about critters!

Slime and Scales II
July 22 - 26 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Explore the daily lives of reptiles and amphibians in their natural habitats. We will learn how to safely catch and handle these interesting animals, and why we should protect them.

Would you know what to do if you got lost? Be prepared to get down and dirty as we learn all about surviving in the wild.

Ologist: Behind the Scenes July 8 - 12    10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Join us as we meet scientists, artists and exhibit developers and find out how they work together to create the exhibits you see when you visit your favorite museums!

Art in Nature: Drawing on Instinct July 15 – 19    1 to 3 p.m.
Bring your imagination to the museum and get ready to create something wild! We will explore the museum grounds and search our new exhibit, Drawing on Instinct, for inspiration and create some fun nature art!

Ages 12 to 14  

Member $60 / Non-member $70

Paleontology July 8 – 12    1 to 3 p.m.
Take a trip through time and investigate life millions of years ago as we learn about the science of Paleontology! How do fossils go from the ground to the museum? What can modern life tell us about the prehistoric past? Discover more than just dinosaurs in this exciting, hands-on class!

Herpetology July 29 – August 2   8 to 10 a.m.
Want to learn more about reptiles and amphibians? We will take an in-depth look at these fascinating animals by observing them in the field and at the museum.

Family, ages 5+  

Member $20 / Non-member $30
Prices include one adult and one child. Each additional person: member $10 / non-member $15

A Night with Bats   July 5   7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Are bats really blind? Why do they hang upside-down? How many kinds of bats live in Oklahoma? Come find out the answers to these questions and more as we discover bat facts and caravan to a local park to look for some!

Art on the Wild Side: Family Art Workshop   August 17    1-3 p.m.
Families will explore the amazing wildlife art of Bob Kuhn in the Special Exhibit “Drawing on Instinct,” then use their experiences together in the galleries as inspiration for a wild family art project to take home! All supplies are included.
Registration for Art on the Wild Side begins: June 3 for members, June 17 for non-members.
